Taking the Bus and Subway in Korea: A First-Ride Guide
LIVING IN KOREA · GUIDE 10 · SERIES FINALE
A first ride can feel easier when you check a few things before leaving: your route, your payment method and your stop. You do not need to learn the whole transport system in one day.
This guide covers city buses and subways. Seoul-area examples are marked below. Ticket prices, accepted cards and transfer rules can differ by region and service.
1. Prepare a transport card
A rechargeable transport card, such as Tmoney, is a practical starting point. You add money to the card, then use it to pay for rides on services that accept it. Check the card's coverage for your route.
Tmoney cards are sold at convenience stores and other listed locations. Buying the card and adding travel money are separate steps. Check the balance before you board. VISITKOREA’s transport-card guide explains the available options.
Ask the shop or machine which payment methods it accepts for adding money. Carrying some Korean won can help. Do not assume a bank card from another country or a phone wallet will work on a bus reader.
For a first trip together, having a separate transport card for each person keeps things simple. Ask about age-based discounts and any details you need to register if you are travelling with children.
2. Check the direction, not just the number
Before leaving, use a route planner and check the current service information. Save your destination's Korean name. Note the bus number or subway line, the stop where you will get off and any change along the way.
For a bus, check that the stop is on the correct side of the road. For a subway, check the platform's direction and the stops shown on its signs. The right line can still take you the wrong way.
Check your return journey too, especially late at night. The last departure depends on the route, station and direction.
3. Ride the subway
Follow the signs to your line and direction. With a transport card, tap at the entry gate and wait for it to open. Use the same card when you leave through the exit gate.
Let people get off before you board. Stay clear of closing doors. If you need to change lines, follow the transfer signs. If you are unsure whether to leave the area inside the ticket gates, ask staff before going through an exit gate.
At your destination, check the exit number for the place you are visiting. Different station exits can lead to different sides of a large road. VISITKOREA’s subway guide provides an introduction to the systems in Korea.
4. Ride the city bus
On most city buses, board through the front door and leave through the rear door. Follow the signs and the driver's instructions. Many city buses do not accept cash, so prepare an accepted payment method before boarding.
Tap your transport card when you get on. Hold a rail or sit down safely. Watch the stop display or listen for your stop, then press the stop button before you arrive.
Tap the same card at the exit reader when you get off. In the Seoul area, this matters for transfer discounts and the correct fare. If the reader shows an error, ask the driver rather than guessing whether the payment worked.
5. Treat a transfer as a new check
환승 means a transfer: changing from one service to another. Keep using the same card throughout the journey.
In the Seoul area, transfer discounts depend on conditions such as the time between rides and the services used. Extra charges may still apply. Do not assume that every second ride is free or that the same rules apply across Korea.
If you board the wrong service, stay calm. Get off at a safe stop and check a new route. At a station, ask staff for help if you cannot find the right platform or your card does not work.
