Buying Bottled Water in Korea: Delivery, Storage and Recycling
Water at Home in Korea · Part 2 of 5
Bottled water can be useful while you settle into a new home. Before you order a large pack, check the total price, delivery details and space in your kitchen.
1. Choose a size you can use and store
Search for 생수 (bottled water). Check the product name: 탄산수 means sparkling water. Look at the bottle size and the number of bottles in the pack.
A large pack needs floor or shelf space. A large opened bottle also needs room in your fridge. Choose a size you can finish soon after opening.
KEYWORD_WORLD tip: Start with a small order. See how much you actually use before buying more.
2. Compare the full cost
Check 배송비 (delivery fee) and the final amount at checkout. A low pack price may come with an extra fee. Check whether a discount needs a membership or a minimum order.
To compare different packs, divide the total cost by the total litres.
- Example pack: 2 litres × 6 bottles = 12 litres.
- Example total, including delivery: ₩9,000.
- ₩9,000 ÷ 12 litres = ₩750 per litre.
This is a calculation example, not a current price or product offer.
If you see 정기배송 (regular delivery), check how often orders repeat, how payment works and how to stop them.
3. Plan for delivery and carrying
- Check the delivery area, expected arrival date and any extra charges.
- Enter your building and unit number carefully. Check the delivery instructions for your building.
- Arrange a suitable drop-off place. Bring the water inside soon, especially if that place gets hot or sunny.
- Think about stairs and carrying. Several bottles can be heavy, even if the pack looks small online.
When the order arrives, check for leaks, damaged bottles and broken seals. If something is wrong, take photos and contact the seller before using the affected bottles. Keep the order details.
4. Store it carefully, then refrigerate after opening
Read the date and storage instructions on the bottle or outer pack. Keep that information if you remove the packaging.
JPDC, the maker of Samdasoo, advises keeping its water out of direct sunlight in a clean, well-ventilated place. Its FAQ also warns that nearby smells can affect stored water.
After opening, JPDC advises keeping the cap closed, refrigerating the water and drinking it soon. Follow your own product's instructions for storage and how soon to drink it.

KEYWORD_WORLD tip: Put older bottles at the front so you use them first. Keep water away from cleaning products and strong smells.
5. Sort empty clear PET bottles
For a clear PET plastic water bottle, use these steps:
- Empty it. Rinse it if needed to remove residue.
- Remove any label. Keep it out of the clear-bottle collection.
- Flatten the bottle and put the cap back on.
- Use the separate clear PET collection point or collection method for your address.
Seoul's guidance covers removing labels and emptying, flattening and recapping PET bottles. The Ministry of Environment says dedicated clear PET collection is for clear water and beverage bottles. A plastic cup or tray does not belong there just because it is clear.

Check your building's signs or your district's collection notice for the place, day and bag rules. Sort the outer wrap and delivery box separately as instructed locally.

KEYWORD_WORLD view: make the routine manageable
The lowest price per litre is only part of the decision. Think about carrying, fridge space and empty bottles too. After your first order, adjust the pack size to fit your home and daily use.
