National Museum of Korea: An Easy Afternoon Guide in Seoul
Looking for something different to do on your next day off in Seoul? The National Museum of Korea is a good place to start exploring Korean art and history at your own pace.
You do not need to know every king or dynasty before you go. Our suggestion is simple: choose a small part of the museum, look closely at a few objects and leave time for a break.
Start with the free galleries
The museum’s permanent exhibition is free. Special exhibitions may have a separate charge, so check the individual exhibition before adding it to your plan.
For a first visit, we suggest starting with the permanent galleries. This keeps the plan simple and lets you decide how much you want to see. You can always return for a special exhibition another day.
Get off at Ichon Station
Take Seoul Subway Line 4 or the Gyeongui–Jungang Line to Ichon Station (이촌역). The museum’s official directions point visitors toward Exit 2. Follow the museum signs from the station.
Save this name for your map search: 국립중앙박물관. The address is 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Check your route before leaving, especially if you are travelling from outside Seoul.

The museum currently lists these opening hours, in Korea Standard Time:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday: 9:30 am–5:30 pm.
- Wednesday and Saturday: 9:30 am–9:00 pm.
Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. On a normal closing day, a late-afternoon arrival leaves less time than you may expect.
The museum closes on January 1, Seollal day and Chuseok day. The permanent exhibition hall also has scheduled closures on the first Monday of March, June, September and December. Check the latest notices for other gallery closures.
Planning an October visit? The Central Asia Gallery, Room 307, is scheduled to close from 12–22 October 2026. This is a closure of that gallery, not the whole museum.

This is a KEYWORD_WORLD suggested plan, not an official tour. Adjust it to your interests and energy.
First 15 minutes: Look at the museum map and choose one area that interests you. Ask at the information desk if you need help finding it.
Next 60 minutes: Explore that area slowly. Pick three objects you would like to remember. Read their labels and notice one detail about each.
Next 30 minutes: Take a break or enjoy the outdoor grounds if the weather is comfortable. The grounds also display stone artworks.
Final 15 minutes: Revisit a favourite object or spend a little time browsing the museum shop. Buying something is optional.
Make it a day you can share
If you and your partner are more comfortable in different languages, start with what you can both see. Which colour, shape or small detail catches your eye? You do not need to translate every label to enjoy the visit together.
Before leaving, each choose one favourite object and explain why. It is a small way to turn a museum visit into a conversation about life and culture in Korea.
Our advice for residents: leave something for next time. A short visit that makes you curious can be more enjoyable than trying to finish every room in one afternoon.
