SHOPPING IN KOREA · PART 1 OF 3

You can buy from a Korean online shop as a foreign resident. Start by checking three things: can you verify your account, can you pay, and can the shop deliver to your address?

This guide focuses on receiving an order at a home in Korea. A BRITA pitcher is one example, but the same preparation helps when buying everyday supplies or gifts.

_ Check where the item ships from

Ships within KoreaAn item sent from Korean stock to your Korean address is a domestic delivery. Your nationality does not turn it into an overseas purchase.
Ships into KoreaAn item sent from another country may need import clearance. A Korean-language product page can still advertise an overseas-shipped item.
Ships out of KoreaIf the parcel is going to another country, check international delivery and that country’s import rules.

A foreign brand is not the same as a foreign shipment. Look for the dispatch location and delivery terms. Korea Customs explains the routes used for overseas purchases.

_ Separate account signup from payment verification

Start with NAVER’s account signup guide if you need an account. Being able to sign in does not establish that every payment service is available to you.

Npay’s official guide for foreign users describes two routes. With a Korean mobile number registered in your own name, or I-PIN, you can complete Korean identity verification and join the standard Npay service. I-PIN is a Korean online identity-verification method.

A qualifying short-term foreign visitor without Korean verification may join Npay Global. That account is limited to designated global services and uses overseas-issued credit or debit cards. Do not assume it unlocks every Naver shopping order. Check the service and payment options offered for your account.

For phone-based identity checks, use the name recorded by your mobile provider. If it fails, ask the provider or Naver which record needs correcting. Do not keep trying different spellings or use someone else’s identity.

_ Check your payment route before filling a cart

For the standard Npay route, check whether your Korean-issued card or Korean bank account is supported. Have access to the authentication method requested by the payment provider.

A Visa or Mastercard logo on your overseas-issued card does not guarantee acceptance. Npay’s overseas-card help page lists UnionPay for direct foreign-card payment and a separate top-up route for eligible overseas residents. This is different from Npay Global. Confirm the route that applies to your account before adding money.

If you cannot complete a supported payment, look for a retailer that explicitly accepts your card and delivery destination, or an available local shop. Browser translation can help you read the page; it does not change payment eligibility.

_ Save one checked delivery address

  • The recipient’s name and a working contact number.
  • The Korean road-name address and five-digit postal code.
  • The apartment building, floor or unit, where needed.
  • A short delivery instruction, if the location allows it.

Keep the unit number in the address field. A delivery note does not replace the full address. Ask your host or building manager to check unclear details. For hotels and short stays, ask whether parcels are accepted before ordering.

_ Make the first order easy to check

KEYWORD_WORLD suggestion: Start with one item you already need. Choose a clear product option, check the seller and return information, and save the final total before paying. A coupon is useful only if its conditions fit your order.

Keep your verification codes, identity documents and payment details out of reviews or public messages. Use the service’s own support channel when an account problem needs help.
