Using an Induction Hob in Korea: Check the Pan Base First
Information checked: 28 October 2026 (Korea Standard Time).
A pan that worked on a gas stove may not work on an induction hob. Before cooking in a Korean home or buying a replacement pan, check the base, then the instructions for your exact hob. A magnetic base is the starting point, not a guarantee of good performance.

Start with the cooking zone
Check the hob’s model information before sorting your cookware. LG explains that induction heats a suitable pan through a magnetic field. A radiant zone, often called 하이라이트 in Korea, heats the surface instead. Do not apply one zone’s cookware rules to another.
Look underneath, then try a magnet
Look for an induction-use statement, IH or a coil-shaped mark on the pan or its packaging. Useful Korean words are 인덕션 사용 가능, meaning ‘suitable for induction.’ Also check the cookware maker’s instructions.
With the pan cool and away from the hob, try a small magnet on its base. Samsung’s cookware guide describes this as a way to identify a magnetic base. The word ‘stainless’ alone does not tell you whether the base is magnetic.
Check more than one spot. LG warns that a pan may work poorly when only part of its base is magnetic, even if it has an IH mark. Its guidance also warns against ceramic pots, including 뚝배기 (Korean earthenware pots), even when marked IH. Follow your hob’s restrictions rather than relying on a badge alone.

Match the base to your model
Choose a flat base and check the hob manual’s allowed pan sizes. Measure the bottom that sits on the cooking surface, rather than guessing from the width of the rim. There is no single minimum diameter to apply to every model.
Electrolux Korea’s guidance says pan size, type and position affect operation and heating. It also advises checking for a dirty, damaged or uneven base when a previously usable pan stops heating.
Use the test for your own hob
Some hobs have a cookware test. Samsung’s test-mode guidance, dated 20 October 2026, directs readers to their model’s manual. Button sequences and displayed results can differ; do not copy a sequence from a different model.
Our practical shopping check: save your hob’s model number and its cookware-size requirements on your phone. Before paying, ask: 이 냄비는 인덕션에 사용할 수 있나요? — ‘Can this pot be used on induction?’ Confirm the exact pan, not just the product range.
