Ice Packs in Korea: Check Water or Gel Before Disposal

Information checked 27 October 2026 (Korea time)

Before cutting open an ice pack from a grocery delivery, read its filling label. Water and gel packs need different disposal routes. The material outside does not tell you what is inside.

Read the filling first

Jangsu County’s official disposal notice (IN KOREAN) says to check both the filling ingredients and the packaging’s disposal instructions. Look for 물, meaning water, or 고흡수성수지, meaning superabsorbent polymer. SAP is another label for that polymer.

If you cannot identify the filling, keep the pack closed while you ask the supplier or local waste office. Our practical suggestion: photograph the full label so you can show both the ingredients and disposal symbols.

Gel: keep the whole pack together

The Waste Guide’s gel ice-pack entry (IN KOREAN) says to place the intact pack in a dedicated ice-pack collection bin or a general-waste fee bag, 종량제봉투. Follow your municipality’s instructions where they differ.

Do not empty gel into a drain. Gangnam District’s official disposal explanation (IN KOREAN) warns that ice-pack contents can block drainage pipes and pollute water.

Water: separate the contents and wrapper

For a pack confirmed to contain water, the water ice-pack entry (IN KOREAN) says to empty the water through a drain and put the emptied plastic-film wrapper in the film collection stream.

Check the wrapper’s own instructions too. A paper or mixed-material outer layer needs its own material check; the plastic-film direction does not identify every type of pack.

Check before visiting a collection bin

Ask your community centre or apartment management whether a dedicated ice-pack collection point is operating and which packs it accepts. Confirm this before making a trip. Keep the pack intact until you know whether that collection route is available.
