Looking for an English book to read in central Seoul? Start with the Global Collections room on the fourth floor of Seoul Metropolitan Library. You can browse library materials without becoming a borrowing member.

Go to the room, not just the building

The Global Collections room holds English and other foreign-language books, foreign periodicals, and books introducing Seoul and Korea in other languages. Look for 세계자료실, the Korean name for this room, on the library's signs.

The library is at 110 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu. Its official directions list City Hall Station, Lines 1 and 2, Exit 5.

Plan around an 18:00 finish

Global Collections normally opens Tuesday–Sunday, 09:00–18:00. Some other rooms stay open until 21:00 on weekdays, so the building's later hours are not the right guide for this collection.

The official hours and closure calendar list Mondays as closed, along with legal holidays other than Sundays and designated temporary holidays. Other closures may be announced. The October calendar specifically lists Monday, 19 October 2026 as closed. Check your own visit date before leaving.

Search first if you want one particular book

Open the library's collection search (IN KOREAN). Our practical suggestion is to search the title or author, then save the book's full title, edition, room, shelf number or call number, and loan status. A matching title alone is not enough to locate the right copy.

If you cannot find the book on the shelf, show the saved record to the room's desk. This is also useful when two people are looking for different languages or editions. A catalog record is a starting point, not a promise that a book will be waiting on the shelf.

Reading here and taking a book home are different

The library's visitor rules allow anyone wishing to read its materials to use the library. Taking books home requires a library card. Check your membership and the item's eligibility before planning to borrow.

Under the borrowing rules, embassy-donated Global Collections materials, reference materials and serial publications are among the items that cannot be checked out. You may still read these on site. Ask the desk if the status of a particular item is unclear.

Information checked: 18 October 2026 (Korea Standard Time). These details apply to Seoul Metropolitan Library, not every public library in Seoul. Room hours, closures and item availability can change.

Prefer reading outside?
