Taking a Bicycle on the Seoul Subway? Check the Whole Trip

A subway ride can be part of a cycling day, but do not assume your bicycle can travel everywhere your ticket can. Check the bike, the day and every train operator on your route—then check the journey home.

Start with the bike and the operator

The government's bicycle transport guide (IN KOREAN), dated 15 September 2026, explains these starting points for Seoul Metro's sections of Lines 1–8:

BikeWhat to check
Folding bicycleKeep it folded. The folding-bike provision is different from the rule for a full-size bicycle.
Non-folding bicycleThe standard permitted days are Saturday and public holidays, including Sunday. Operators can adjust permitted days, times and sections.

These are not network-wide permissions. Outside Seoul Metro's sections, the relevant operator sets its own rules. Do not extend this table to Line 9, Korail services, other railways, e-bikes or electric scooters.

A weekday exception is not a transfer pass

Seoul's 14 January 2021 announcement (IN KOREAN) described a Line 7 weekday exception, from 10:00 to 16:00. That is an older announcement, not confirmation of today's conditions for your particular journey. Check the operator or station before relying on a weekday exception—and ask about transfers and the required exit time.

Check the station, not just the train

For a non-folding bicycle under the Lines 1–8 rules above, use the first or last carriage. Do not ride inside stations or trains. Use designated bicycle safety equipment where provided. The rules prohibit using elevators, escalators and wheelchair lifts with the bicycle, so plan suitable stair or bicycle-ramp access. Keep other passengers' way clear.

Our practical suggestion: write down both journeys

Before leaving, make two short notes: outward and return. For each, list your stations, operators, travel day, expected time and any transfer. Ask station staff to check the bicycle part of that plan, not only the passenger route.

If you cannot confirm one section, choose a different cycling plan before setting off. For example, consider a shorter ride that ends where it begins. A late finish or a different return day deserves a fresh check.
