Hard Art at MoMA PS1: A Guide to Black Abstraction

KEYWORD_WORLD · Culture · 3 November 2026

Hard Art, opening at MoMA PS1 in New York on 5 November, brings more than 40 artists together to explore abstraction by Black artists in the United States. Its title comes from artist Peter Bradley’s description of The DeLuxe Show; the exhibition invites close attention to art that can ask questions without representing a recognizable scene.

The museum’s exhibition page describes work from 1969 to today. It places historical paintings beside newer practices using painting, sculpture, video and sound. The show is still upcoming as of this article’s check; the museum’s published opening date is 5 November 2026.

What is abstraction?

Abstract art uses choices such as color, form, material and rhythm without requiring a straightforward picture of a person or place. The same shape can suggest different things to different viewers. A useful first question is simply: what is happening in front of me?

Look at a work’s edges, the weight of a mark and the space between elements. Then read its title, date and materials. Those details can change the questions you bring back to it, even when there is no single answer.

Why these generations are shown together

The museum says the exhibition is organized by themes rather than as a simple timeline. It connects artists who came to prominence in the 1970s with later artists working across media. The announced participants include Peter Bradley, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Ed Clark, Torkwase Dyson, Nikita Gale and Caroline Kent.

For one comparison, the museum lists Bradley’s Circle of Fifths (1973) as acrylic on canvas, and Gale’s PRIVATE DANCER (2020) as a light show using equipment including spotlights and cables. A canvas and a timed light work offer different ways to think about color, space and duration. The comparison is a reading prompt, not a claim about the works’ final placement in the exhibition.

The title has a history

MoMA PS1 says the title draws on Bradley’s description of The DeLuxe Show. Its 50th-anniversary announcement also connects Hard Art to Afro-American Abstraction, a 1980 exhibition at PS1 curated by April Kingsley. The connection gives this new show a local history as well as a cross-generational scope.

That history offers a way into the exhibition: compare how an older and a newer work use materials, then consider how the museum’s arrangement places them in conversation. Each artist’s practice remains distinct.

Before you go

The exhibition is at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens. The museum’s calendar for opening day lists hours of noon to 6 p.m. Check the exhibition page and calendar for current access, hours and updates before visiting.

On 7 November, the museum has scheduled an afternoon conversation revisiting the 1980 exhibition. Check the event page for the latest details and reservation information.
