Renting a Water Purifier in Korea: What to Check Before You Sign
Water at Home in Korea · Part 3 of 5
A rented water purifier can make your daily routine easier. You can fill a glass at home, and your plan may include regular care. Before you sign, check how the contract fits your home and your time in Korea.
This guide focuses on rental plans for water purifiers connected to a home's water supply. The questions below are KEYWORD_WORLD's practical checklist. The linked company pages provide examples; your chosen model and contract may have different conditions.
1. Check whether the plan fits your stay
Start with your likely moving date or departure date. Then ask the provider whether you can apply in your own name.
Ask which identity documents, phone number and payment method they accept. Also ask how you can contact them if you need help in English. Keep a copy of the offer and the contract before installation.
2. Separate the three contract dates
Ask the provider to mark these dates clearly. Do not assume that they all fall on the same day.
| Term to find | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Minimum use period 의무사용기간 | When does this period end? What would I pay if I stopped earlier? |
| Total contract period 계약기간 | When does the whole contract end? What payments continue after the minimum period? |
| Ownership transfer 소유권 이전 | Will the purifier become mine? When, and under which conditions? |
LG's subscription notices list the contract period, minimum use period and ownership conditions separately. They also describe possible early cancellation charges. These can include more than a penalty, such as collection costs or gift costs. Check the conditions in your own agreement. LG subscription example and notices (Korean).
3. Ask for the full payment schedule
Ask for the monthly fee before credit card discounts. If the price is a special offer, check how long it lasts and what you must do to receive it.
Request a written total for all scheduled payments. Check whether it includes registration, installation and other upfront fees. Ask what electricity or other running costs you will pay separately.
Useful question: “If I leave Korea in this month, what charges would apply?” Ask for an explanation based on your expected departure date.
4. Confirm that it can be installed
Send the provider photos of the planned location and the space under the sink. Ask the installer to confirm:
- The required space, including room around the purifier.
- The accepted water supply, water pressure and power connection.
- Whether hoses, a drain connection or drilling are needed.
- Any extra work and its price before the work begins.
LG's installation guide shows that requirements depend on the model and kitchen. It also lists extra charges for some installation work. Use the guide for your exact model. LG water purifier installation guide (Korean).
KEYWORD_WORLD tip: In a rented home, get the landlord's agreement before drilling or changing fittings. Ask who will restore the area when you leave. Also ask what happens to your order if installation is not possible.
5. Know who does the care
Ask whether your plan uses service visits (방문관리) or self-care (자가관리). Confirm the visit schedule, filter replacement schedule and cleaning you must do yourself. Check whether filters are fitted during a visit or delivered for you to replace.
Ask which repairs are covered and which are charged separately. Coway's service policy, for example, distinguishes faults under normal use from other chargeable work, including moving and reinstallation. A service contract does not make every visit free. Coway fees and warranty guide.
Keep the model's care instructions and a record of filter changes. If you travel often, ask how to arrange missed visits and restart the purifier after a long absence.
6. Plan for a move or the end of the contract
Before booking movers, ask the provider to check the new address. Confirm that service and installation are available there.
Get separate answers for removal, transport and reinstallation. LG's installation guide lists these separately and notes that extra costs may apply. Ask for a quote for your route and model. LG moving and installation charges (Korean).
If you are ending the contract, confirm the final charge, collection date and any notice you must give. If someone else wants to take over, ask whether the provider allows a contract transfer. Keep the collection receipt and check the final bill.
KEYWORD_WORLD view
Rental can suit a home that wants regular service and expects to keep using the purifier. If your stay is uncertain, work out the likely cost of leaving early before choosing a long contract. A comfortable monthly payment should also come with conditions you understand.
