Buying Milk in Korea: Which Cartons Need the Fridge?

Information checked: 29 October 2026 (Korea Standard Time).

A milk carton on a supermarket shelf can look much like one in the chilled aisle. In Korea, check the storage instructions before deciding where it belongs at home. Shelf-stable milk can stay outside the fridge while unopened when its label allows it. Once opened, it belongs in the fridge.

Start with the storage words

Look for 냉장보관 (keep refrigerated) or 실온보관 (store at room temperature) on the pack. The actual product’s instructions are the useful guide; carton shape, a screw cap or a long date alone does not tell you how to store it.

You may also see 살균우유, meaning pasteurized milk, and 멸균우유, meaning sterilized milk. Seoul Milk explains that pasteurized milk is distributed chilled, while sterilized milk and its packaging are treated for longer storage at room temperature.

Unopened shelf-stable milk has a different job

A shelf-stable carton can be useful as a small backup for coffee or breakfast when fridge space is limited. That is a shopping choice, rather than a claim that one type is better for everyone.

For a concrete example, Seoul Milk’s sterilized milk product page describes room-temperature storage and lists 200 mL and 1,000 mL sizes. Follow the carton’s own storage conditions and date when buying any brand.

Opening the pack changes the plan

개봉 후 냉장보관 means refrigerate after opening. Return the opened carton to the fridge and use it promptly, following any more specific instructions on that product. A large carton only makes sense if you can finish it under those conditions.

Seoul Milk’s storage FAQ recommends prompt use of opened milk under refrigeration. It also explains that damage during delivery or handling can make tiny holes in shelf-stable packaging and allow contamination, even before the printed date.

Before putting a delivery away, check the corners, seams and straw area. Set aside leaking or visibly damaged cartons and contact the seller or manufacturer. Keep the pack and order details available so they can check the product.
