Seoul City Wall Museum: A Short Indoor Stop Before a Walk

Want to understand Seoul's old city wall without committing to a long walk? Start at Seoul City Wall Museum near Dongdaemun. It is an indoor visit about the wall's history—not a requirement to hike the whole route afterward.

Get the place right

Search for 한양도성박물관, or Seoul City Wall Museum. The address is 283 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, floors 1–3. Do not confuse it with the main Seoul Museum of History on Saemunan-ro, or with Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station.

The museum's official directions (IN KOREAN) list Dongdaemun Station, Lines 1 and 4, Exit 1 or 10, followed by about a five-minute walk. Save the Korean museum name in your map app before leaving the station.

Plan around the museum's own hours

The current visitor guide (IN KOREAN) lists these daytime arrangements:

CheckPublished visitor information
AdmissionFree
HoursTuesday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; last entry 5:30 p.m.
ClosedMondays and January 1. A Monday that is a public holiday is an exception: the museum opens.

Our planning suggestion: allow 45–60 minutes and arrive well before last entry. That is an editorial estimate, not an official tour duration. For an evening visit or a holiday, check the museum's latest notices or call 02-724-0243; do not assume another Seoul museum's late hours apply here.

Follow three questions through the galleries

The museum's permanent-exhibition guide (IN KOREAN) divides the story into Seoul and its wall, construction and management, and damage and rebirth. Use that sequence as a simple way to look around: What did the wall mean for the city? How was it built and cared for? What was lost and later restored?

You do not need to read every panel to enjoy a short visit. Choose one detail that interests you and look for its place in the larger story. This is a self-guided suggestion; we have not confirmed an English-language tour or an English label for every display.

Keep food outside the galleries, leave exhibits untouched, and do not use flash or a tripod. The visitor guide also prohibits commercial photography. These are museum rules, not permission to reuse images of its collections.

Leave the outdoor walk optional

Finish the museum first, then decide whether the weather, daylight and your energy suit more walking. The indoor visit can stand on its own. If you want a longer outdoor outing, plan it separately rather than treating closing time as the start of a full wall walk.
