A filter pitcher can make a small kitchen easier to use. You fill it by hand and manage the care yourself. A simple routine helps: wash the pitcher, prepare each new filter and store the water as directed.

This guide is for filter pitchers. A cartridge is the replaceable filter inside. BRITA Korea's instructions are used as examples. Check the manual for your own pitcher and filter, especially if you bought them from another country.

1. Know what your filter is designed to do

Find the model name and cartridge name before you start. On Korean packaging, 사용방법 means how to use it, and 필터 교체 means filter replacement.

The CDC explains that most pitcher filters are not designed to remove germs. Better taste also does not prove that water is safe. Choose a filter for the substances you want to reduce. CDC guide to home water filters.

KEYWORD_WORLD tip: If you are unsure about your home's water, check the supply first. A familiar filter name cannot answer a question about the water at your address.

2. Wash the pitcher and handle the filter separately

Take out the cartridge before washing the pitcher parts. Check which pieces can go in a dishwasher. Electronic lids and indicators need their own care.

For its Liquelli pitcher, BRITA Korea recommends cleaning two or three times a week. Its instructions allow dishwasher cleaning at up to 50°C, but the lid must be washed by hand. This does not mean every pitcher or every part can go in the dishwasher. BRITA Korea: Liquelli care instructions.

BRITA's Korean FAQ recommends warm water and a soft sponge for cleaning the pitcher. Dry it before use. For the cartridge, it advises rinsing the outside under running water; the inside does not need separate cleaning or disinfection. BRITA Korea care FAQ.

3. Prepare each new cartridge

A new filter may need preparation before you drink the water. Follow the steps for that cartridge each time you replace it.

For BRITA MAXTRA PRO, the Korean instructions say to:

  1. Unwrap the cartridge. Put it in a clean pitcher filled with cold tap water. Gently move it to release air bubbles.
  2. Discard that water and fit the cartridge firmly into the funnel.
  3. Filter and discard the first two batches of water. Drink from the next batch after the water has passed through.

These are MAXTRA PRO preparation steps. Another cartridge may need a different process. BRITA Korea: MAXTRA PRO preparation.

The CDC also recommends gloves when changing filters and washing your hands afterward.

4. Track replacement from the start

BRITA Korea lists a 150-litre capacity for MAXTRA PRO. Its four-person example uses 5.35 litres a day and about four weeks, or 28 days. The FAQ allows one to two months for very low daily use and advises against using it beyond two months.

Those are BRITA Korea's conditions, not a schedule for every filter. Follow the instructions for yours. BRITA Memo counts time; it is not a water-quality test. BRITA Korea: replacement and Memo guidance.

KEYWORD_WORLD tip: Write down the cartridge name, the date you fitted it and the next change date. Reset the reminder when you fit a new filter. Resetting it does not renew an old cartridge.

5. Keep filtered water cool

BRITA Korea recommends a cold place such as a fridge. Keep the pitcher away from direct sunlight. Its advice is to drink filtered water within 24 hours, whether it is refrigerated or kept at room temperature. BRITA Korea: filtered-water storage.

KEYWORD_WORLD tip: Make enough for the coming day. If you often have water left over, prepare less next time.

6. Store spare filters and plan for time away

BRITA's Korean FAQ says to keep unused filters sealed in their original packaging, away from direct sunlight and heat.

KEYWORD_WORLD tip: Before a long trip, check the manufacturer's instructions for storing a used cartridge and restarting the pitcher. Keep that advice with your manual. A wet, used cartridge needs its own storage instructions; guidance for a sealed spare does not answer that question.

KEYWORD_WORLD view

A pitcher can fit well into everyday life if its care is easy to keep up with. Give it a regular cleaning time and a clear replacement record. The useful choice is one you can manage comfortably in your own home.
